Cyclone in Burma and Earthquakes in Sichuan

A Report from Druk Foundation Ltd. (Hong Kong)

As has been advised by His Holiness the Twelfth Gyalwang Drukpa in his website, there are HK$200,000. in Druk Foundation Limited's account which forms 10% of the funds raised in November 2006 for Namdruk restoration. These 10% was especially dedicated for purposes of providing immediate relief for natural disasters such as those we saw in Burma and in Sichuan lately.

As we are not yet equipped to form groups to provide direct relief aid to those affected by disasters ourselves for the moment, we need to join forces with those who have an established history to do so.

It has been decided that for Burma, we will join forces with Tzu-Chi, a Buddhist charity organization which has been allowed into Burma with relief supplies days ago. Tzu-Chi has a long history of providing relief aid and medical aid to those in distress due to natural disasters. It is a charity organization whose volunteers will pay for all their own travel expenses to go to locations to provide help so as to preserve the total amount of donation received for their intended purposes. As always, Tzu-Chi will buy the necessary supplies and will distribute them directly themselves to the needy people. This is their way of ensuring money does not go to unintended purposes. Within these past few days, Tzu-Chi has managed to give out 10,000 life supply packs to the needy in Burma. On May 21, Drukpa Lineage has given HK$100,000 to Tzu-Chi as our initial support for their relief effort in Burma. Out of the HK$100,000 given, HK$40,000 came from the Burma and Sichuan Funds raised thus far.

For relief in Sichuan, Druk Foundation Ltd has taken advantage of a relief fund matching scheme provided by Royal Bank of Scotland, Hong Kong Branch by giving the HK$100,000 to the Bank's 'Sichuan Relief Fund' account. All the money gathered by this Bank will be matched, i.e. for every dollar received from a donor, the Bank will also give an additional dollar, so as to double the donations. The Bank will send the total amount of funds raised to either the China Red Cross or to the China Charity Federation in China. Both of these charitable organizations have a long history of established creditability of ensuring funds are dedicated to their intended purposes. The China Charity Federation is a well known and recognized national charity organization in China.

So far, through PayPal and direct wire transfers to Druk Foundation Ltd's account, we have received close to HK$80,000. in the Burma and Sichuan Relief Funds. His Holiness wishes that some help on the ground to be co-ordinated and provided from the Drukpa Lineage in Chengdu, buying supplies for the school children when situation allows. As a start, we intend to take HK$40,000 from the Sichuan and Burma relief funds for that purpose. We will continue to do more as more funds come in.

We heartily thank all those who have so kindly and generously given to help those in their hour of need.

May love and compassion flourish in our hearts…
